Freedom By Design

  • 2006-07: AIAS Illinois began its Freedom chapter in the 2006-07 school year. After a slow start, Captain Ryan Murphy led the team of about 10 volunteers to the redesign and interior renovation of the Lifeway Behavioral Health Services, with Owner Daniel Melton in Clinton, Illinois.
  • 2007-08: Long story short: we got a project, we got a ton of free lumber to build a ramp and new porch, the client got better, we kept a ton of free lumber and moved it 37 times around the Architecture Annex, where it still sits today.
  • 2008-09: An ADA ramp was constructed at a Women and Children's Abuse Shelter during the Fall '08. The 30 person team also participated in the Urbana Disability Expo and helped in a design charette for a proposed Community Center that will be Universally Designed (will be constructed in the C-U area). In the Spring '09, the team worked with the Charleston Transitional Facility to create more accessible conditions at the facility. The projects planned include a storage partition for the main room to create two different spaces (catering to the users' personalities). This partition will also provide acoustical assistance in this large room. We also plan to install grab bars, renovate a kitchen sink to be ADA accessible and design some vocational mechanism for the users.
