On June 11, 1929, the Alma Matter was unveiled on Alumni day. Paid for by the Alumni Fund of the classes of 1923-1929, it was sculpted by Lorado Taft as his gift in honor of the 50th anniversary of his graduation from the University. The statue consists of a woman in a robe with outstretched arms and twin figures representing labor and learning after the University’s motto. The two quotes are inscribed on its base read “To the happy children of the future, those of the past send greetings” and “Her children arise up and call her Blessed Proverbs 31-28.” On August 22, 1962 The Alma Mater was moved from its original location behind the auditorium to its current location on in front of Altgeld Hall.
