Bruce Weber[[1]] became the 16th head men's basketball coach at the University of Illinois on April 30, 2003. In just his second season in Champaign, he led the Illini to their first National Championship appearance in the program's fourth trip to the NCAA Final Four. Weber was born Oct. 19, 1956 in Milwaukee, Wis. He graduated from Milwaukee Marshall High School in 1974 and went on to earn a B.S. in education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1978. He would later coach against his Alma Mater during Illinois' celebrated 100th season of basketball. Weber coached fifth grade for one school year before returning to college at Western Kentucky University where he began his college coaching career. He earned a M.S. in education administration and physical education from Western Kentucky in 1981 while serving as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program there. Weber spent the next 17 years as an assistant to legendary Purdue coach Gene Keady. He worked with the Boilermakers from 1981 to 1998, when he took a head coaching job at Southern Illinois University. Weber coached SIU to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference, winning conference titles in 2002 and 2003. In 2002 he led the Salukis to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and in 2003 he was named the MVC Coach of the Year. Weber and his wife Megan have three daughters: Hannah, Christy and Emily.
