Green Street is a street that runs through Champaign-Urbana and is likely the most common known street in the area by the student body. Usually when students talk about Green Street, they refer to the portion between Wright and First streets. This commercial district serves as the entertainment and retail center for students at the University of Illinois and is the heart of Campustown. In 2002, Green Street between Wright and Fourth underwent a $7 million streetscape project. This included reducing the number of lanes from two on each side to one, increasing the size of the sidewalks, trees, and other additions to beautify the area. Many of the retail and entertainment stores, restaurants, and campus bars are located in this area. So many students resort to going to Green Street when looking for a fun time or a place to get away from school work.

Dividing the Community

While running through the heart of the University of Illinois, Green Street also divides the Engineering side of campus from the rest of the university. This divide is not only physical, but cultural in the minds of many. As a result, many students use Green Street as a reference point when referring to locations. For instance, "North of Green" refers to the engineering departments at the university as well as the computer science department, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and the Beckman Institute. "South of Green" are the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Fine and Applied Arts, Agriculture, Medicine, and many other academic units.
