Illinois.edu
From U of I Wiki
Illinois.edu is the URL that replaced the Urbana-Champaign campus's former UIUC.edu URL. The transition occurred sometime around June 25, 2008. A redesigned homepage shortly followed the URL transition.
The university provides a comprehensive page of frequently asked questions addressing the URL transition.

[edit] E-mail addresses
Systems administrators started implementing Illinois.edu e-mail addresses (netid@illinois.edu) on May 13, 2008, according to an e-mail from Michele Raupp, Illinois.edu Project Manager of the Office of Public Affairs. Departmental e-mail addresses (netid@department.illinois.edu, etc.) will begin working by the end of 2008. The syntax of departmental e-mail addresses will change from department@uiuc.edu to netid@department.illinois.edu; the NetID will most probably be "webmaster" for most departments and colleges.
Existing UIUC.edu e-mail addresses will continue to function for the foressable future.
A project page and transfer CITES wiki help page is avaialble to CITES Tech Support, CCSP and Webmasters.
[edit] History
The Illinois.edu URL has been registered by the university since January 13, 1997. The UIUC.edu URL has been registered by the university since July 18, 1985.
The first .edu domains were registered on April 24, 1985, and on March 15, 1985, the first domain name ever, Symbolics.com, was registered.
[edit] Concerns
According to a News-Gazette article: "Folks hadn't thought about branding or the potential implications of identifying themselves on the Internet. Over the years the early adapters have found themselves with these (domain) names that aren't as meaningful or relevant to their key constituents," said UI Associate Chancellor Robin Kaler.
The campus plans "eventual retirement" for the UIUC.edu URL, but faculty, staff and alumni have expressed concern that such a move could cost the university too much money for what proponents consider a "branding" change. No monetary estimate has been calculated in changing existing print or Web materials.
Others have expressed concern that because the Urbana-Champaign campus is one campus among three, to declare one campus as the "Illinois" campus is to undermine the importance of the other campuses while simultaneously confusing the relationship among them. In addition, the campus risks further confusion is distinguishing Illinois.edu and UIllinois.edu, the administrative website of the University of Illinois system as a whole.
Although there is a suggestion that the Office of Public Affairs has researched the effects of branding the Urbana-Champaign campus by the Illinois.edu URL, no research has been suggested about the potential confusion in similar URLs.
[edit] Sub-domain requests
CITES started taking new sub-domain requests November 1 for Illinois.edu. Sub-domains are the word or words prepending a top-level domain, e.g. "media" in "http://media.illinois.edu."
[edit] Other university practices
Other universities handle the situation differently:
- The University of Minnesota's homepage is generally occupied by the flagship campus, and other campuses and the administration is linked from there.
- The Pennsylvania State University's (commonly known as Penn State) homepage is also generally occupied by its flagship campus
- The University of Wisconsin's homepage is at http://www.wisc.edu, but the administration, similar to the University of Illinois, is at http://www.uwsa.edu
Northwestern University underwent a similar change from NWU.edu to Northwestern.edu in 1999, some of which was documented online.
