The Illinois Student Senate, commonly referred to as the abbreviation "I.S.S.," is the representative democracy of students at the U of I. Although it holds no legal jurisdiction, Illinois Student Senate passes resolutions that reflect the views of the elected and, ideally but rarely, the student body. ISS senators are required to participate on a committee devoted to specific U of I political, financial, and social issues.

The student body president is Justin Randall. An incomplete list of the moot committees follows:

  • Budget
  • Outreach
  • Academic Affairs
  • Student Rights
  • Student Life
  • Appropriations
  • Appointments
  • Governmental Affairs
  • Cultural and Minority Affairs
  • Support the Troops
  • Graduate and Professional Affairs

Illinois Student Government

Students were formerly represented by the Illinois Student Government, an all-student representative democracy. The Illinois Student Government disbanded in 2004 when students voted to ends its existence over concerns that it could not adequately represent the views of the students. Portions of it were incorporated into the Illinois Student Senate, ideally cementing it closer to the decisions of university administrators, faculty members and staff.
