The Stanley O. Ikenberry Commons will be a group of residence halls and a student and dining and residential programs building that will replace the Gregory Drive Residence Halls and the Peabody Drive Residence Halls, popularly known as the Six Pack.

Construction of the complex is scheduled in a 20-to-25-year development plan. Other estimates are more ambitious, placing completion between 14 and 20 years.

The future buildings will be named after Stanley O. Ikenberry, the university's 14th president, who held office from 1979 to 1995.

The Stanley O. Ikenberry Hall will function as the complex's single dining hall, replacing the Illini Orange Snackbar, and is planned to be the first wing of a residence hall for 150 students, including students with disabilities. The building's roof and heating/ventilation/air conditioning machinery will be LEED certified. The building will also house the "largest dining centers in the United States," according to the university's housing department.

The hall is scheduled to be completed in fall 2009 for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Current blueprints of the new building reveal:

  • Dining areas
    • A pizza/pasta bar
    • A soup/deli/salad/desert bar
    • A burrito/fajita/quesadilla bar
    • A smoothie/coffee station
    • A breakfast bar
    • A made-to-order station
  • Learning center
    • Study areas
    • Computer lab
    • Recreation rooms
    • Multipurpose rooms
  • Mini courtyard
  • Covered bike parking
  • Air conditioning (a feature that Six Pack rooms lack)

The Housing Division will pay for the construction with the sale of bonds funded by room-and-board fees.
