With the right people, running a wiki doesn't cost much. But it isn't free.

Google AdSense text ads

Since June, 2007, the U of I wiki shows one or two text ads from the Google AdSense program in the left rail. We do not do this out of profit; we believe the information should be free and accessible. But the realities of life tell us that few things in life are free, even this wiki. Aside from the contributory time given by the wiki's system operators, running servers and their associated software still cost money. To support the operational cost of the wiki, we run Google AdSense ads.

Fundraising

We don't see the need for a fund-raising drive to support the wiki yet, but those circumstances could always change. Like all of your websites, we want to remain free, but we also want to be able to keep doing what we do.
